International Literacy Day, please volunteer
A couple of weeks ago, President Shawna Stump reminded us of this important date
and now we have the opportunity of making Literacy Week very real in our
community. Please volunteer to read in many classes at West Elementary School,
Athens, the week of September 8, 2008. The school is thrilled to have Rotary
members celebrate literacy with the kids.
There are lots of openings so let me know when you can do it (most classes after
9:30 am and before noon).E-mail me if you are interested as I am putting a list
together for the school. Rotaract may also contact the Literacy Center at Ohio
University. They advance the goals' of UNESCO's International Literacy Day and
they always need volunteers. Check the following:

International Literacy Day (8 September)
On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international
community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. Despite many
and varied efforts, literacy remains an elusive target: some 774 million adults
lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and
two-thirds of them are women; 75 million children are out-of-school and many
more attend irregularly or drop out.
